Kanell Restaurant Dinner Show

Apsara Dinner Show in Siem Reap

In the heart of Siem Reap, Kanell brings together Cambodian cuisine, culture and performance for an evening in our tropical garden, set beside a traditional Khmer wooden house. A carefully considered menu is served course by course while musicians accompany an evening of live performance, from the grace and storytelling of classical Apsara dance to the strength and tradition of Bokator.

For years, we have welcomed guests from around the world to share this experience with us. Kanell has evolved over that time, but the spirit behind it remains the same: genuine Cambodian hospitality and a desire to create an evening that stays with you long after your time in Siem Reap has come to an end.

Dinner at Kanell is a set menu, thoughtfully composed to be enjoyed as a complete experience rather than a buffet. Each course has its place in the evening, offering a taste of Cambodia through dishes selected and prepared by our kitchen.

The Performance

Siem Reap Traditional Dance Show

Apsara is perhaps the most recognisable of Cambodia’s classical dances, its graceful forms immortalised in the carvings of Angkor. Every gesture has meaning, from the movement of the hands to the expression of the face. When the dancers take to the stage at Kanell, the garden has a way of becoming very quiet.

Apsara is at the heart of the evening, but only part of the story. The performance draws from Cambodia’s classical and folk traditions, including Moni Mekhala, goddess of the seas and lightning, Sovann Maccha, the golden mermaid princess of the Reamker, and dances inspired by Cambodian village life.

Our dancers and musicians are Cambodian artists, and these traditions take years to master. Through music, movement, costume and expression, their stories come to life in front of you.

Bokator Performance in Siem Reap

Kun Lbokator is an ancient Cambodian martial art, with a tradition stretching back centuries. In 2022, it was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising its importance to Cambodia’s living cultural heritage.

At Kanell, Bokator is performed just a few metres from your table. The demonstration combines speed, strength and remarkable discipline, beginning with the traditional rituals that have long formed part of the practice before the fighters display the techniques of the martial art itself.

It brings a powerful contrast to the grace of Cambodia’s classical dance and offers a rare opportunity to experience another side of Khmer cultural tradition, up close and as part of the evening at Kanell.

The Dinner

Khmer Fine Dinning Restaurant

Dinner at Kanell is served as a set menu, chosen when you make your reservation and designed to unfold course by course throughout the evening.

Our cooking is rooted in Khmer cuisine, with influences from across Asia and ingredients sourced close to home. Jasmine rice comes from local fields, sea bass from Cambodia’s coast, and the palm sugar used in our desserts is produced in the countryside around Siem Reap. Our menus were created with Chef Kimsan Pol, also head chef at Embassy by Chef Kimsan in Siem Reap.

Four menus are available, including two entirely vegetarian options. Vegan diets and food allergies can also be accommodated; simply let us know when booking so our kitchen can prepare accordingly.

THE SETTING

A Garden in the Middle of Town

Kanell is tucked away on 7 Makara Street, near Angkor High School and just minutes from the centre of Siem Reap. From the street, there is little to suggest what lies beyond the entrance.

Step inside and the city gives way to a tropical garden of palms, centred around a traditional Khmer wooden house. The open-air setting is relaxed and intimate, and as daylight fades and the garden settles into the evening, the atmosphere changes with it.

Siem Reap’s evenings are warm year-round, and Kanell is designed as an open-air experience. We recommend dressing lightly and comfortably, so you can settle in and enjoy the garden throughout the evening.
